Special Branch officers are still investigating
whether an undercover army unit in Northem Ireland deliberately sabotaged
an inquiry into the alleged leaking of military intelligence documents
to loyalist terrorists. But Scotland Yard dismissed a newspaper report
that Sir John Stevens, the Metropolitan PoliceCommissioner, was convinced
that the unit had heen responsible for setting fire to the office in Northern
Ireland where key evidence was being kept.
