A 47-year-old born in Guyana yesterday became the highest ranking black officer ever to serve in Britain's armed forces.

David Case was promoted to the rank of air commodore in the Royal Air Force with a salary of £70,000 a year. He will be responsible for personnel and training based at RAF Innsworth in Gloucestershire.

He came to Britain at the age of five, studied engineering at Queen's University Belfast and won the sword of honour as best cadet at the RAF college at Cranwell.

He has served in Germany and was recently head of the presentation team responsible for the RAF's relations with the public and the media.
