A post-mortem examination is being carried out on a 23-year-old officer cadet who died following a training exercise at Sandhurst. Graham Holmes collapsed two weeks ago after a seven-mile march with 35 other cadets. The march lasted one hour, 45 minutes and each soldier was wearing full combat gear and carrying a rucksack. Mr Holmes was described by the Army as fit and able before the accident. He had suffered from heat exhaustion on a run last September but Army spokeswoman Major Gill Prowse said he had not had any other medical problems during his training. The Armed Forces Minister, Dr John Reid, said his death was a matter for deep regret. The cadet was halfway through a one-year training course on the way to becoming an officer in the Royal Engineers. Meanwhile, a second man, 22-year-old Adrian Muir, is also being treated in hospital after collapsing on a separate training run on Tuesday. Army officials are reportedly examining his case. |
