A rally of 200 000 in Foća in Bosnia protests against attacks by Belgrade-backed forces.
01.08.1990 BG Zhelu Zhelev becomes president of Bulgaria, named by the majority of MPs. Leaving the parliament building after the election he is asked for a comment by journalists. He hands them a piece of paper on which he had written one word: "democracy".

Referendum on the status of the 11 Serb-dominated Croatian districts ends with am almost unanimous vote for 'independent status'.

22.08.1990 DDR Start of the final Volkskammer session, amidst wrangling over the date of unification.
23.08.1990 DDR The Volkskammer votes with 294 votes for and 62 against the accession of the DDR to the Federal Republic of Germany.

Croatian Assembly removes vice-president Stipe ©uvar from the Collective Presidency, alleging partiality to the Serb cause during the 19.08 referendum. Polling booths had been open in Belgrade for 4 days to enable émigré Croatian Serbs to vote. 
The Serbian National Council at Knin proclaims the "Serbian Autonomous Region of Krajina." 
2 JNA combat aircraft allegedly intercept a Croatian police helicopter trying to disperse a crowd near Knin.
