05.1990 YU Annual rotation of the Yugoslav Collective Presidency. Borislav Joviæ (Serb) becomes President, Stipe ©uvar (Croat) his deputy. Joviæ calls on the Federal Assembly to adopt a more centralised constitution. Markoviæ, federal PM, forms a new political party, the Alliance of Yugoslav Reform Forces, based on his government team, to work for economic reforms and preserve Yugoslavia's unity as "a pluralist community of equal nations and nationalities."

 In Bosnia-Hercegovina, the founding congress of the SDA (Party of Democratic Action) debates and rejects the idea of presenting itself as a multi-ethnic party. Izetbegoviæ: "For now, unfortunately, our party must be sectional. The parties that try to represent everyone are small and weak. There is a real risk of civil war here; our main aim as a party is to keep Bosnia-Hercegovina together .. We need a big party, then we need political power." SDA's first commitment is to try to hold Yugoslavia together.

20.05.1990 RO First 'free' elections in Romania for 53 years. Iliescu is elected president, with 83.63% of votes in the presidential election. National Liberal candidate Radu Campeanu scores 9.61% and Ion Ratiu of the National Peasants' Party 3.56%. National Salvation Front picks up 66% of the vote, 68.9% of seats in the House of Deputies and 69.82% of seats in the Senate.

22.05.1990 HU Hungary's new government is sworn in during a two-day session of the National Assembly. Premier Joszef Antall presents his programme of government, Programme for National Renewal. His main theme is the return to Europe, his government to be "a European government .. [to support] the traditions of democracy; pluralism and openness." 
New Foreign Minister Geza Jeszenszky: "If Hungary joined the Common Market today it would be disadvantageous for us because we are not competitive enough. On the other hand, a new form of associate membership would be advantageous before our full accession." 
Parliament votes down an emergency motion proposed by the Free Democrats (SZDSZ) for an imminent debate on continuing Warsaw Pact membership.
23.05.1990 DDR Bonn offers the East a one-to-one exchange rate for wages, pensions and limited savings. 
First joint session of the Bundestag and Volkskammer committee on German Unity.
24.05.1990 DDR German ecoomic and monetary unions (GEMU) is fixed for 02.07.1990. 
De Maziere says he is "not in Berlin to take orders." Signing of the treaty on economic, social and monetary union.

26.05.1990 YU An attempt to resume the 14th Congress of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia is boycotted by Croatia, Macedonia and Slovenia.
27.05.1990 BG Unrest spreads in the area of the Gaugaz Turkish minority in Bulgaria.
