Eating out in Birmingham - Where not to eat

    Birmingham
Fish!
Wharfside Street
The Mailbox
BIRMINGHAM
B1 1RQ

If you like small portions of rather bland fish in top class surroundings, and the setting takes precedence over the meal itself, then choose fish! at the Mailbox. My Swordfish, grilled, with salsa could have been tofu; my girflriend's 'organic' salmon was about half of one salmon steak and as for the king prawns (£15.50), well, they were fine but there were only six of them. So it's thumbs down for fish!'s food (and as ever, overpriced table wine) but a big thumbs up for the setting.

Egon Ronay might very well have recommended, but he obviously had neither the meal nor the (lack of) service that we enjoyed. There is hovering, and there is rudeness. There is efficiency and there is abruptness. And there is food which is spicy and there is food which is bland. King prawns in satay sauce ought to have some flavour about them .. .but no. Maybe I just caught them on a bad day, but I will not be returning here in a hurry.
