Eating out in Birmingham - Bars and Pubs

    Birmingham
The Bell
St Peter's Road
Harborne
BIRMNGHAM
B17

The Bell is an architectural curiosity tucked away in old Harborned Village. Apart from stocking a fine but small selection of guest ales at all times it serves hearty food in a welcoming environment. In the summer it comes into its own with its secluded beer garden and active lawn bowling green. This is a pub I was proud to call my local.
The Joint Stock
Oh what beautiful architecture! And a Fullers pub to boot! Heaven sent for southerners in exile. Not that I am one, but I do like a pint of London Pride now and again. At the weekend, this is definitely a pub for people who find the pace of life down on Broad Steet a little too hectic.
    West Midlands
Hagley
The Fountain Inn
01562 883286
Situated at the bottom of the National Trust property Clent Hill, the Fountain Inn is a traditional old country village pub which has a fantastic menu, much better than your average pub fayre. Judging by the queues on the Sunday I visited, this is a location to book well in advance at peak times.
Examples from the menu:
Eight king prawns tossed in garlic butter and served with granary bread £6.95
Sirloin steak with madeira sauce garnished with thinly sliced ham and tongue £10.95
Panfried parrot fish fillet in garlic butter and sundried tomatoes, on mixed salad £7.95
Chicken breast stuffed with Cornish white crab meat, fired with a dark crabmeat sauce £9.95

The Robin Hood
Drayton
DY9 0BW

CAMRA pub in the countryside slightly to the south of Belbroughton. Great food, although arrive early for lunch at the weekend as it is very popular!

The Bear Inn
Berkswell
CV7 7BB
01676 5332002

Although the Bear Inn is part of the Chef & Brewer chain of pubs, but don't let this put you off. The building is an outstanding old massif made by local craftsmen using local bricks and wood and dates back to the 16th century. It almost oozes history and has a fine selection of chef's specialities in addition to the beter-than-average Chef & Brewer's menu. Friendly staff, cozy open fires and a smaller bar upstairs for intimacy.
