The
West Midlands Region
The West Midlands Region is the hub
of the UK's road and rail network. Situated in the heart of England,
112 miles north west of London, it is among the most accessible
locations in Britain.
The region, as distinct from the
County of West Midlands, covers 5 025 square miles and includes
Staffordshire, Shropshire, Hereford and Worcester and Warwickshire.
The metropolitan boroughs of the region are Birmingham, Dudley,
Coventry, Walsall, Solihull, Sandwell and Wolverhampton.
Manufacturing industry has always
been strong in what is the birthplace of global industrialisation,
and remains vitally important to the region, employing 28% of the
workforce, compared to the national average of 20%
The region's 9% share - 5.3 million
- of the United Kingdom's population generates £51.2 billion
(8.6%) of the country's GDP.

The West Midlands is the UK’s manufacturing
heartland and home to a large number of major automotive and engineering
companies. However, by far the largest part of the region's land space
is rural with attractive countryside, market towns and picturesque
villages - and a world class food and drink industry. The West Midlands
has been very successful in attracting foreign investment and has over
1,250 foreign firms. It is estimated to produce over 25% of UK manufacturing
exports and is well placed at the centre of the UK’s motorway network
with good exhibition and conference facilities. There is a substantial
service sector, many successful private and public sector partnerships,
engineering centres of excellence, science parks, internationally renowned
Universities and national research facilities. The region also faces
major challenges: a need to reduce dependence on certain industries
and diversify into higher value added sectors; a need to improve the
performance of large numbers of smaller traditionally managed companies;
and a
need to diversify the rural economy.
